Program History

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony (SVSS) annually hosts the Sun Valley Summer Music Workshops during the first week of its season for elementary, middle and high school students. Originally conceived as a program for Blaine County music students ten years ago, the Workshops have grown from 35 students in its first year to an enrollment of over 145 students in 2007.

The Workshops will take place August 4-8, 2008 (Monday-Friday) with morning and afternoon sessions, including afternoon rehearsals for the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra. Selected Summer Music Workshop students will be given an opportunity to perform at the Church of the Bigwood on Friday, August 8 in an afternoon concert at 3:00pm or in the evening concert at 6:30pm.

We hope that you will consider applying for an opportunity to participate in a rewarding musical experience!

The fee for the entire Summer Music Workshop experience is a non-refundable $75 Registration fee. There are no tuition fees for the workshop classes. Each year we offer scholarships to a limited number of students. Please contact the office for scholarship information.

This year we are again asking each student to purchase a white polo shirt with Sun Valley Summer Music Workshops logo to wear for the concerts on Friday for $15. Concert attire consists of: Black pants or skirt of tasteful length (no mini-skirts), white SMW polo shirt and black shoes. If you have a SMW polo shirt from last year you may use it again this season.

The Registration Fee covers the entire week of classes and rehearsals and is payable upon notification of acceptance into the Workshops (late May). Meals are not included, but daily snacks are provided during breaks by generous local donors. Students who are involved in an afternoon rehearsal will be advised to bring a bag lunch.

While we do not normally provide housing for SMW students, a very limited number of home stay housing situations may be available for qualified students. Please contact the office. For information regarding housing in the area please contact the SV/Ketchum Chamber of Commerce or visit their website.
